Houseplant enthusiasts often focus on light, water and soil, but experts say stagnant indoor air is a key factor in plant health problems. Fungal spots, mould on compost, and pest infestations like mealybugs can all arise from rooms with no airflow.
A simple solution is running a small desk fan near plants. This mimics the gentle movement plants experience in the wild, strengthening stems, discouraging mould, and reducing pest pressure. The fan should be set on low, positioned to one side rather than directly on foliage, and run for a few hours daily.
One test involved a Begonia rex showing early signs of powdery mildew. After placing a small fan nearby, the spread stopped, the soil surface stayed cleaner, and new stems grew firmer. However, the hack won't save an unhealthy or neglected plant.
While it may sound unnecessary, the fan creates better growing conditions in stuffy homes, acting as a pest deterrent. Avoid using it near plants already exposed to dry air from radiators.
