Greenbank Park: Liverpool's Underrated Scouse Haven
Greenbank Park: Liverpool's Underrated Scouse Haven

Greenbank Park, a modest 18.8-acre green space nestled between Sefton Park and Smithdown Road, offers a distinctly Scouse atmosphere that sets it apart from its larger neighbor. During a recent heatwave, a visit revealed a park filled with local families, fishermen speaking with unmistakable Liverpool accents, and a tranquil setting perfect for a picnic.

A Local Oasis Amidst the Heatwave

Seeking respite from the sun, the park provided an ideal spot. The entrance was alive with children's laughter and thick Scouse accents as they played with water guns. A green pond divided the entrance, where numerous fishermen sat peacefully along the water's edge, some even pitching tents. The contrast with Sefton Park, which seemed populated mainly by students and visitors, was striking. As one visitor noted, 'This feels like the park where all the Scousers actually go.'

Picnics, Ducks, and Wildlife

After bypassing the lively entrance, a tilted green patch on the right side of the lake offered benches for sunbathing. Despite the park's size, it was spacious enough to avoid overhearing other conversations. The visit included feeding ducks while keeping a safe distance from assertive geese, and spotting numerous squirrels. The park closes at 10pm and reopens at 5am, catering to early risers.

Proximity to Award-Winning Dining

The park's location also offers easy access to The Watering Can, a nearby restaurant that won the LCR Hidden Gem Award in 2021 and Café Bistro of the Year in 2023, with runner-up finishes in 2022 and 2024. The day concluded with a short walk through the tree-lined far end of the park, leading to Elmbank Road.

A Welcome Change from the Norm

While Greenbank Park may not offer unique attractions beyond its lake and ducks, its authentic local character and peaceful ambiance make it a worthwhile alternative to the more crowded Sefton Park. As one visitor remarked, 'I'm glad I opted for Greenbank over Sefton - it was a welcome change from the norm.'
