Gardener's eggshell trick keeps slugs and snails off plants
Eggshell trick deters slugs and snails from garden plants

Gardeners frustrated by slugs and snails devouring their plants can try a natural, chemical-free solution using a common kitchen leftover. Enthusiastic gardener Adam Kirtland, who posts on TikTok as 'The View from the Potting Bench', recommends crushing eggshells and scattering them around plants to deter the pests.

Natural alternative to pesticides

While chemical pesticides can eliminate slugs and snails, they pose a risk to other wildlife in the garden. Gastropods also play a vital role in the natural ecosystem, so deterring them is a more responsible approach than eradicating them altogether.

Adam's tip is entirely natural and makes use of leftover kitchen waste that would otherwise be thrown away. He said: "Crush and scatter them around your plants to deter slugs and snails." He also recommends baking the shells beforehand to "make them extra crispy".

Extra calcium for healthier growth

The shells serve a dual purpose, warding off unwanted pests while also encouraging plants to thrive. Adam explained: "Over time, they will rot away and add extra calcium back into your soil."

This additional calcium nourishes plants, supporting stronger, healthier growth throughout the year.
