Citric acid can remove limescale from toilets in as little as 15 minutes, offering a natural alternative to vinegar and bleach, according to cleaning experts. The method, shared by TikTok user Jottie (@jottiesjournal), involves diluting two tablespoons of citric acid in warm water and applying it to the toilet bowl.
How Citric Acid Works
Limescale stains in toilets are mineral deposits—including iron, calcium, magnesium, and lime—that turn brown over time. Bleach only whitens these deposits without removing them, while citric acid breaks down limescale into calcium citrate, a soluble salt that rinses away easily. Jottie explained: "Citric acid is a great naturally powerful product to remove both limescale and mould, making it perfect for our toilets."
Application Method
To use, dilute two tablespoons of citric acid in warm water and pour into a spray bottle. Place two teaspoons of citric acid directly into the toilet bowl, adjusting the amount based on limescale severity. Leave for 15 minutes, or overnight for stubborn stains. No scrubbing is required.
Expert Endorsement
Cleaning guru Lynsey Crombie also recommends citric acid for toilets, calling it "an effective but also a safe alternative to commercial cleaners." She advises leaving it to soak for "at least one hour" or "overnight for the best results." Citric acid is widely regarded for its antibacterial, antifungal, degreasing, and whitening properties.
