Welsh gardeners can keep their flowers blooming throughout the summer with three simple tasks, according to gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish. In a recent video, Ish outlined his three-step approach for maintaining a long-lasting floral display.
Deadheading for Continuous Blooms
The first task is deadheading, which involves removing wilted flowers to redirect the plant's energy. Rather than pinching off spent blooms, Ish recommends using secateurs to snip the flowerhead at the base of the stem. He explained: "That will preserve all of the energy, instead of going to the stem, it will now focus on making a brand new flower. So it's not wasted. Don't just pick off the top, it doesn't do much at all." Deadheading should be done regularly throughout the summer to promote fresh growth and maintain a neat appearance.
Watering and Mulching for Moisture Retention
Ensuring flowers are thoroughly watered is crucial, especially during periods of intense heat. To help retain moisture, Ish suggests applying a layer of coir mulch across the top of the soil around the base of each plant. This prevents water from reflecting the sun's rays and evaporating before it can penetrate the soil.
Feeding with Tomato Feed
Finally, gardeners should provide consistent feeding. Ish's preferred solution is tomato feed, which is rich in potassium and phosphorus—nutrients that encourage flowers to grow larger and more vibrant. He said: "The reason I do is because it's high in potassium and potash, which most flower feeds are, and they absolutely love it." Applying tomato feed every couple of weeks, Ish assures, will produce results that are "amazing."
These three simple tasks—deadheading with secateurs, watering with coir mulch, and feeding with tomato feed—can help Welsh gardeners enjoy a vibrant garden all summer long.
