Gardening Expert Reveals 3 Essential April Tasks for a Stunning Outdoor Space
3 Essential April Gardening Tasks for a Beautiful Outdoor Space

As spring arrives in full force, many gardening enthusiasts are eager to revitalise their outdoor spaces. A gardening professional has outlined three straightforward yet essential tasks to undertake throughout April to significantly enhance both the efficiency and visual appeal of your garden.

Maximising Your Garden's Potential This Spring

With the return of longer daylight hours and milder temperatures, April presents ideal conditions for specific gardening activities. Adam Kirtland, the expert behind the popular gardening brand View From the Potting Shed, recently shared a detailed TikTok video highlighting these crucial April jobs. For those fortunate enough to have a garden, following his advice can help unlock its full potential.

Planting Vegetables for a Bountiful Harvest

The first task on Adam's list focuses on vegetable planting, a cornerstone of productive gardening. He emphasises the importance of planting potatoes promptly, offering two versatile methods for different garden setups.

For those with ground space: Dig a trench approximately six inches deep and plant your potatoes with the eye side facing upwards, spacing them about 30 centimetres apart. Water them thoroughly and allow them to grow naturally.

For limited space or container gardening: Use a large pot or bucket. Add a couple of inches of compost to the bottom, plant about four potatoes per container with the eyes upwards, cover them with soil, and let them develop.

Adam also highlights that it is not too late to plant garlic. Using cloves from a supermarket bulb is perfectly acceptable. Loosen the cloves, plant them individually in holes about 10 centimetres deep, spaced roughly a hand's width apart, cover them, and they will thrive.

Sowing Fast-Growing Seeds for Quick Results

Adam explains that April is an excellent month for sowing seeds due to increasing sunlight, which accelerates germination. Fast-growing options like radishes and beetroot provide quick satisfaction, making gardeners feel accomplished.

He notes that seed sowing requires minimal space, making it suitable even for those with just a windowsill in a flat. In his video comments, Adam provides a comprehensive list of seeds suitable for sowing now, including:

  • Indoor and covered options: Tomatoes, peppers, chillies, aubergine, cucumber, courgette, squash, pumpkins, sweetcorn, basil, cosmos, zinnias, and marigolds.
  • Outdoor options: Carrots, beetroot, radish, turnip, parsnip, spinach, and chards.

Deadheading Daffodils for Future Blooms

The final task Adam recommends is deadheading daffodils to ensure spectacular flowers next year. Deadheading involves removing wilted or dying blooms to improve the plant's appearance and encourage renewed flowering.

By clearing away old flowers, you prevent the plant from setting seed, redirecting its energy into producing new blooms. This results in a longer and more vigorous blooming period. Adam advises cutting just behind the seed pod rather than pulling the flower off, a technique that guarantees the best daffodils annually.

Completing these three tasks in April can transform your garden into a more productive and visually stunning space, setting the stage for a successful growing season ahead.
