Members of Wishaw Men's Shed have reflected on the first year of the shed being part of the community. The group is open to males of all ages and started up in July last year.
How the group started
Launched by a small group of men in the community, it offers the chance to sit and have a talk, and take part in a number of activities. Meetings were originally held at Cambusnethan Old Parish Church but now the shed has a permanent base in Gowkthrapple Community Centre.
The men's shed was given an extra boost with the news that four-time world snooker champion John Higgins agreed to be the group's patron.
Membership growth and support
Robert McGinty, from the men's shed, said: “Getting John to come on board was a really big boost to us. John and his wife Denise have been such a help to us.” He added: “We had hoped to get 50 members but we now have 76 and we are hoping to get even more. The support we have received from local organisations has been great through sponsorship and supporting our various events.”
Supporters include Gerry Fearnon from United Maxi Taxis, Chelsea and Dave at Wishaw Tesco, Bernadette from Asda in Motherwell, Tricia at Barrs Bakers, Diane at Denholm Bakers, Linda’s Cafe, Priory Snacks and Gareth’s snack van.
Funding and trips
The group was able to apply for funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and get a minibus on the road. Since getting the bus, members have enjoyed day trips to the Royal Highland Show, Inveraray Highland Games and a Beatles tribute night in Shotts.
Earlier this year, Wishaw couple Tom and Wendy Kennedy enjoyed a day at the Glasgow Kiltwalk raising money for the Men’s Shed, raising £2000 in the process and even stopping for a chat with Kiltwalk backer Sir Tom Hunter.
Open day
Looking forward, the Men’s Shed will be holding an open day on Saturday, August 15, from 11am to 3pm.
