Spanish media have intensified their criticism of Anthony Gordon ahead of England's World Cup round of 16 clash against DR Congo. The 25-year-old winger joined Barcelona from Newcastle United for £69.3 million before the tournament, a decision that has drawn increasing scrutiny as his performances for England have failed to impress.
Gordon's Struggles at the World Cup
Gordon started England's Group L opener against Croatia but was ineffective, while Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score the fourth goal in a 4-0 win. Rashford, whom Barcelona reportedly declined to sign for less than half of Gordon's fee, has since replaced Gordon in the starting lineup.
In the second group game against Ghana, Gordon again failed to make an impact and was substituted. He was then dropped for the final group match against Panama, with Rashford starting. Gordon did not come off the bench and was not keen to be interviewed after the game.
Withering Criticism from Spanish Outlet ABC
Spanish newspaper ABC delivered a scathing assessment, noting that Gordon "ran down the corridor of the mixed zone with the press faster than his attacks on the wing in this World Cup matches." The report added that Barcelona fans would be "watching with concern what is happening on England's left wing" and questioned why Rashford was not signed instead.
ABC highlighted that Barcelona had "paid a fortune" for Gordon "despite the club's financial struggles." The report concluded by emphasizing the "immense pressure" on Gordon due to "the weight of his transfer fee, the challenge of joining a European giant, the scrutiny of the global stage, and constant comparisons to Lamine Yamal." It stated, "Being measured against one of the world's best is arguably unfair. Yet, it is to be expected when a club has just staked 80 million euros on you."
Previous Criticism from Other Spanish Media
Gordon was also criticized after earlier matches. El Periodico called him "virtually invisible" in the win over Croatia, while La Vanguardia said he was "subdued," though his defensive work earned some praise.
Possible Changes for England Against DR Congo
It would be a surprise if Gordon returns to the starting lineup against DR Congo. Rashford, despite seeing plenty of the ball, did not impress against Panama. England manager Thomas Tuchel could instead deploy Eberechi Eze or Morgan Rogers on the left flank.
