Cinnamon: The Kitchen Spice That Keeps Ants Away Naturally
Cinnamon: Natural Ant Repellent from Your Kitchen

Ants can be a persistent household nuisance, but a common kitchen spice offers a natural solution. Members of the Facebook group 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' have reported success using cinnamon to repel ants, with one user stating: 'Cinnamon works. I did it and they never came back.' Another added: 'They hate cinnamon, it got rid of ours.' A third commented: 'We live out in the country, and for some reason, I get them in the kitchen every few years. I use cinnamon and they are gone in a day and don't come back.'

How Cinnamon Repels Ants

Nicole Carpenter, president of Black Pest Prevention, explains that cinnamon 'creates an unfavourable environment for ants, making them want to leave your space.' However, she notes that 'the scent of cinnamon itself doesn't kill ants.' Instead, its powerful aroma disrupts the pheromone trails ants rely on to locate food, effectively deterring them without causing harm.

Applying Cinnamon Correctly

For best results, inspect cracks and gaps in foundations, walls, and around windows and doors—common entry points for ants. If you spot ants entering through these areas, mix cinnamon with a small amount of water and apply it using a cotton bud along their route. Ismael Girard, CEO of Pest Agent, explains that the key component, cinnamaldehyde, 'tampers with ants' pheromone trails, making it harder for them to navigate toward their food sources or return to their colonies.'

Preventive Measures

While cinnamon is effective, consistent cleaning, proper food storage, and immediate cleanup of spills and crumbs are essential to avoid attracting ants. The kitchen is a prime target, as ants seek food sources to transport back to their colony. Combining cinnamon application with good hygiene practices can help keep your home ant-free.
