BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has announced he will be taking a brief break from his programme to accompany his youngest daughter to university open days. The 52-year-old broadcaster, who recently separated from his wife Tess Daly, shared the news with listeners.
Family Milestone Amid Personal Turmoil
Vernon revealed that he will not be on air this Friday, June 19, as he takes his 17-year-old daughter Amber to visit universities. Amber is set to start university in September 2027. The presenter joked about returning to further education before explaining the real reason for his absence.
He said: "I'm not in tomorrow. I'm having Friday off. Because I'm going to university open days. I think the time is right for me to step away from broadcasting and go back into further education. No, I'm joking. I'm taking our youngest to open days around universities and I'm really looking forward to it. It's an exciting time in life, and also I get to hold her hand. Do you know what I mean? Not necessarily on the campuses but walking around whatever town we're going to. So sweet."
Background on the Split
Last month, Vernon and Tess Daly announced their separation after nearly 23 years of marriage. They released a joint statement saying: "After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably. This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire for what is best for both of us. We remain great friends and, most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority. There are no other parties involved in this decision. We will not be making any further public comments."
The couple share two daughters: Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 17. They currently live together in a six-bedroom home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, and it is unclear if either plans to move out.
Listener Reaction
Vernon's announcement came as he discussed weekend plans with listeners, also touching on the Isle of Wight Festival. Fans have expressed support for the presenter during this difficult time.
