Toby Stephens on Equus Revival at Menier Chocolate Factory

Toby Stephens, the acclaimed actor known for his roles on stage and screen, is set to star in a new revival of Peter Shaffer's classic play Equus at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London. The production, which begins previews in September, marks a return to the West End for the play that shocked audiences in the 1970s.

Stephens on the Role

Stephens will play Martin Dysart, a psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with a troubled boy who has blinded six horses. The actor spoke about the intensity of the role, saying it requires deep psychological exploration. “It’s a demanding part, but that’s what makes it so thrilling,” he said.

The Play's Legacy

Equus premiered in 1973 and has been revived several times, most famously in 2007 with Daniel Radcliffe. The play delves into themes of passion, repression, and the clash between modern rationality and primal urges. Stephens noted that the play remains relevant today, as it questions the cost of conformity.

  • Stephens last performed on the London stage in 2019’s The Emperor.

The actor also discussed the challenge of performing in a small venue, where every nuance is visible. “The audience is right there, so you have to be completely present,” he explained. The revival is expected to run for a limited season, with tickets already in high demand.
