Rupert Grint is set to reprise the role of Ron Weasley in the Broadway hit Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The actor will join the long-running stage show for 17 weeks starting in February 2027.
Grint on returning to Ron
“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life,” Grint said in a statement. “There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting.”
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said that his return “creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward”.
Following Tom Felton
The 38-year-old actor follows on from Tom Felton, who also decided to reprise the role of Draco Malfoy on stage after playing him in the film series. Felton will continue to play the character until January.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was originally staged in London in 2016 and across its many international incarnations, it has sold more than 14m tickets. The New York production has made over $532m.
Career and other projects
Grint’s post-Potter films have included M Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin and romantic drama Charlie Countryman. He was recently seen in horror Nightborn and will play Bob Cratchit opposite Johnny Depp in this November’s Ebenezer. He made his Broadway debut in 2014’s It’s Only a Play from Terrence McNally alongside Nathan Lane.
The star has previously chosen to distance himself from Harry Potter writer JK Rowling’s anti-trans views. “I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers,” he said in 2020. “Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.”
This year also sees the launch of HBO’s much-anticipated Harry Potter television series.
