Royal Exchange Theatre to Undergo Major Refurbishment for 50th Anniversary
Royal Exchange Theatre Major Refurbishment for 50th Anniversary

Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre auditorium is set for a major refurbishment ahead of the building's 50th anniversary. The announcement comes as the theatre company unveils its programme of shows to mark half a century in the industry.

Studio Reopening and Refurbishment Plans

The refurbishment coincides with plans to reopen the theatre's 100-seater second artistic space, the 'Studio'. This will be the first time the space has opened since March 2020, timed to align with the launch of the Bruntwood Prize for North West Playwriting. The reopening of the Studio will allow work to be carried out in the auditorium ahead of summer 2027.

Anniversary Programme and Collaborations

The theatre has announced a series of shows for 2027 and 2028, featuring collaborations with renowned theatre makers including Beverley Knight, Olivier-award winning playwright Simon Stephens, Tony-award nominated director Lileana Blain-Cruz, Talawa Theatre Company, and THISISPOPBABY.

To mark the 50th anniversary, the building will revert to its original name, the Royal Exchange Theatre Company, reflecting a 'renewed commitment to collaboration both with the North and beyond.'

Statements from Leadership

Artistic Director and Co-CEO Selina Cartmell said: “The Royal Exchange was built on the limitless possibilities of exchange and on the bold and ambitious spirit that defines our home city. As the world’s eyes turn to Manchester, I’m thrilled to announce a season that captures the imagination, shifting perspectives, energy and originality of the North while declaring our international ambition.
