Ronaldo Player-Coach Role at 2030 World Cup Considered

Cristiano Ronaldo, currently 41 and one of the oldest players at the 2026 World Cup, may take on a player-coach role for Portugal at the 2030 tournament, according to former England defender Danny Mills. However, Mills believes it is more likely that Ronaldo will retire from playing and focus solely on coaching the next generation.

Ronaldo's Current World Cup Performance

Ronaldo is participating in the 2026 World Cup with Portugal, scoring two goals, including a brace against Uzbekistan. He is the second-oldest player at the tournament, behind Scotland's Craig Gordon, who is 43. Portugal has advanced to the round of 32.

Mills' Prediction on Ronaldo's Future

Speaking to betTOM, Mills stated: "Unless Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the player-coach for Portugal at the next World Cup, I can't see him playing. I'm not sure you can justify starting Ronaldo for Portugal in four years' time." Mills emphasized that Ronaldo is "one injury away from being done" and that the body recovers less effectively after age 40. He added that Ronaldo will be involved in 2030 "in one way or another," but starting is unlikely.

Challenges with Egos in Portugal's Squad

Mills praised Ronaldo's goalscoring record but noted that "a few too many egos and star players" in Portugal's team may resist playing under Ronaldo, contrasting with Argentina's setup for Lionel Messi. He said: "It goes without saying he's an outstanding footballer with incredible numbers to his name."

Manager Roberto Martinez's Dilemma

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez faces criticism for starting Ronaldo over younger options like Goncalo Ramos. Mills described the situation as "delicate," stating: "If Martinez leaves Ronaldo out and Portugal don't win, he'll be criticised. Similarly, if Portugal lose with Ronaldo on the pitch, he'll also face criticism." Mills suggested using Ronaldo off the bench rather than starting him.
