Overheard Wife Criticising Him: Should He Confront Her?

A husband has been left shocked and upset after overhearing his wife and her sister criticising him while they shared a drink in the kitchen. The man, writing to agony aunt Coleen Nolan, said hearing his wife tell her sister she is sick of him doing nothing around the house and picking his personality apart felt like a character assassination.

Long-term relationship and unspoken grievances

The couple have been together for 12 years and have two children. The husband insists he does his fair share of housework and childcare, and says his wife has never voiced these complaints to him directly. He has been stewing on the overheard conversation for a couple of weeks, getting increasingly annoyed.

He points out that he works hard, which enables his wife to stay at home with the children, and she has never complained about that arrangement or said she wants to return to work. Although he hates confrontation, he is aware he has been off with her and suspects she has noticed.

Coleen's advice: Start the conversation soon

Coleen advises him to bring it up sooner rather than later, warning that after two weeks of stewing, a minor disagreement could cause him to explode. She suggests opening gently with: “Look, I didn’t want to say anything at the time, but I overheard you talking about me with your sister and I was upset by some of the things you said.”

She urges him to listen and keep the discussion constructive. He should also tell his wife that if she feels unhappy about anything in future, she must talk to him about it, otherwise nothing can be solved. The same applies to him – letting the conversation fester has made it a much bigger deal.

Coleen stresses that both partners need to learn to communicate openly and honestly, and that if they cannot work things through together, the relationship will suffer. If they need help overcoming hurdles, counselling would be a good idea.
