Plot and Premise
The story begins when Zeus, King of the Gods, feels threatened by the engagement of his daughter Hebe to a mortal named Gregg. Determined to stop the wedding, Zeus hatches a plan that sends the cast on a journey through Ancient Greece, the Underworld, and back. Co-written and directed by John Nicholson, known for the Olivier-nominated The Time Machine, the show includes 80 costume changes designed by Fi Russell.
Character Highlights
According to reviewer Miranda Pell, the standout character is Hera, played by Matt Freeman. Hera is depicted with an 'Anna Wintour style' personality, delivering dry humour and savage one-liners. Other notable characters include Gregg, the hopeless romantic; Poseidon, who appears in sparkly speedos with an Australian accent; a confused hotel porter named Moussaka (later Tzatziki and Banana Split); a seductive hotel receptionist named Maria; and the centaur Nestor, whose physical gags draw laughter. The second half of the show takes place in the Underworld, where Hades attempts to drive Zeus insane.
Not for Children
Le Navet Bete emphasises that this is not children's theatre. The company states: "It's not kids theatre. The silliness and stupidity are always at the centre of it." The show includes adult content such as a three-headed dog twerking, Greek Gods in bondage, and a song to Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out of Hell.'
Final Thoughts
