Must-Watch Epic War Drama for Band of Brothers Fans

A 'terrifying' and 'gut wrenching' TV show has been praised by fans for its 'strong, realistic' and 'epic' approach to telling the stories of men at war. It has drawn many comparisons to the phenomenally popular 2001 American war drama miniseries, Band of Brothers. It is, of course, the 2010 war drama, The Pacific, which actually serves as a companion piece to Band of Brothers and 2024's Masters of the Air.

Made up of 10 episodes, the miniseries, which was produced by HBO, follows the United States Marine Corps' conduct in the Pacific Theater of Operations throughout the wider Pacific War, focusing mainly on the perspectives of three marines who were connected but are in different regiments of the 1st Marine Division.

The series is based on the true stories, experiences and memoirs of real US Marines; Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and John Basilone - though Basilone was killed in action on February 19, 1945, on the first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima. The marines are played by actors James Badge Dale, Joseph Mazzello and Jon Seda respectively, alongside a supporting cast of characters.

It was lauded by critics for its commitment to a more psychological and darker tone, as well as its depictions of the graphic violence experienced during war and conflict. The miniseries does utilise a disjointed narrative, which is in contrast to companion show Band of Brothers.

The Pacific is often still praised by TV fans and boasts a coveted 89% score on popular review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.

One reviewer said: 'Very similar to Band of Brothers, but still quite different. Instead of following a company, it focuses on men who went through hell, and that's what the series portrays: the human hell that the Marines experienced in the Pacific.'

Another agreed: 'This series is second only to Band of Brothers for me!'

A third added: 'Strong, realistic, epic! For everyone who wants to remember history, who is into brothers in arms and a lesser known theatre of world war 2 than d-day – this is it!'

While a fourth said: 'Very accurate and true to the books Helmet For My Pillow and With The Old Breed. There was some Hollywood changes made to the stories but for the most part it was very close to the experiences those men had.'

Someone else shared: 'Gut wrenching, heart breaking, and terrifying all at the same time. The Pacific takes you through the horrors of the Pacific battles that took place during WWII, and it absolutely delivers. You grow to fall in love with many of the characters, and become heart broken when you lose them.'

And another added: 'A classic film about WWII showing the horrors of the war, without stupid heroism or US propaganda. Good script, characters with depth and evolution during the entire series, solid acting. Good cinematography with many shock scenes.'

However, some reviewers disagreed with the praise and said Band of Brothers still comes out on top for them. The Pacific is available to stream on NOW.
