Durham Cathedral has announced the return of its sell-out light and sound show Luxmuralis for a fifth year, with a new theme titled 'Time'. The immersive experience will run from October 7-11, 2026, and tickets are now on sale.
New Theme: Time
The 2026 show, created by artistic director Peter Walker and composer David Harper, will explore humanity, history, and imagination. Visitors will follow a route through the cathedral, encountering a dramatic narrative that takes in different eras. The cathedral interior becomes a canvas, depicting the mysteries of time itself, including the intricate workings of clocks inspired by H.G. Wells' The Time Machine.
Previous Shows and Evolution
Luxmuralis debuted at Durham Cathedral in 2022 with 'Life', followed by 'Science' in 2024, 'Space' in 2025, and 'The Storytellers' last year. Each show has expanded the immersive experience, with 2025's literary theme extending into the Cloister and Chapter House. The 2026 edition promises to build on this tradition.
Visitor Experience and Tickets
The 45-minute experience begins in darkness, with an illuminated route accompanied by atmospheric music. Visitors can pause to take photographs and light a candle at the end. Entry is by timed ticket, with advance booking essential. Tickets cost £11 for adults and £4.50 for children, with free entry for under-threes and carers.
Andrew Usher, chief officer of visitor experience and enterprise at Durham Cathedral, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Luxmuralis back to Durham Cathedral once again. This event offers a wonderful opportunity to experience this sacred space in a unique way. We warmly invite visitors of all ages to come and explore. For those who may not have visited the cathedral before, this is a special chance to step inside and see the cathedral in a way that is both creative and thought-provoking.”
The cathedral will operate as normal during the day, with the show taking over each evening. The event has become a seasonal highlight, drawing visitors to the North East.
