Lorraine Kelly has paid tribute to her father, John Kelly, who died after a fall on an icy path in freezing conditions. The 84-year-old was found injured early on Saturday morning in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are investigating whether he slipped on ice as part of their inquiries into the incident. Staff from a nearby Tesco discovered the great-grandfather injured at around 7am and contacted emergency services. There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
The TV presenter, 66, announced the tragic news on Instagram, writing: 'My dad has died. I am mourning the man who bought me a telescope when I was five years old, who watched the moon landings with me and taught me to always be curious and interested in everything.' She asked for privacy for her family at this distressing time.
Temperatures had dropped below freezing overnight, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across Scotland. Local residents described the area where Mr Kelly was found as an accident blackspot, with one shop worker saying: 'People have been slipping constantly because it's so treacherous underfoot.'
Mr Kelly, a former television repairman, is survived by his wife Anne, 85, and son Graham, 57. Lorraine previously spoke of her heartache at being separated from her father during lockdown and after a cancer scare in 2021. She lives in Buckinghamshire with her husband, cameraman Steve Smith.
