Channel 5's six-part psychological thriller Little Disasters has concluded, revealing a different culprit than Sarah Vaughan's bestselling novel. In the TV adaptation, Rob (Stephen Campbell Moore) accidentally injures baby Betsey, while in the book, friend Charlotte (Shelley Conn) is responsible.
Finale Plot Summary
The penultimate episode saw Jess (Jo Joyner) in police custody after leaving her children Frankie and Betsey alone to buy paracetamol. However, it was revealed that Rob had entered the home during her absence, seeking to persuade Jess's husband Ed (JJ Field) to back his business venture. While helping Frankie change Betsey's nappy, Rob became distracted by documents and the baby fell from the kitchen island onto the floor. Rob blamed Frankie and pressured him to stay silent.
Frankie suffered flashbacks and behavioral issues, and during a social worker interview, it emerged that Rob had threatened him that Jess would go to prison if the truth came out. The case against Jess was dropped, and the friends (excluding Rob) gathered for Betsey's birthday picnic.
Differences from the Book
In Vaughan's 2020 novel, Charlotte accidentally drops Betsey after Frankie pushes her, and she panics instead of seeking help. Vaughan told Time Magazine that the producers found it unrealistic that a woman would leave a harmed baby, reflecting a double standard about men and women.
Cast and Reception
The series, starring Diane Kruger, Jo Joyner, Shelley Conn, and Patrick Baladi, aired first on Paramount+ in May 2025 before its Channel 5 broadcast. Viewers called it "addictive" and "brilliant." The finale aired at 9pm on Channel 5.
