ITV pundit Lucy Ward: Partner saved her mum's life at World Cup

ITV pundit Lucy Ward has paid tribute to her partner Neil Redfearn after revealing he saved her mother's life while she was away covering the World Cup in the United States. The 52-year-old former Leeds and Doncaster forward is currently working as a co-commentator and analyst for ITV at the 2026 tournament, traveling across Mexico, Canada, and the USA.

Heroic act during World Cup absence

Ward took to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday night to share her gratitude, posting a caption that read: "This one saved my Mum’s life on Friday whilst I was away at the World Cup. What a man, forever grateful for you." The post was made in the build-up to the Mexico vs Ecuador round of 32 match, which she worked on with lead commentator Joe Speight at Azteca Stadium.

In a follow-up post, Ward confirmed her mother's condition: "Mum is fine and back home from the hospital. All good," before adding "Sometimes life comes at you fast. What a man." The specific details of the medical emergency have not been disclosed.

Neil Redfearn's background

Neil Redfearn, 61, played over 800 professional matches between 1982 and 2006, representing clubs including Bolton, Lincoln, Doncaster, Crystal Palace, Watford, Oldham, Barnsley, Charlton, Bradford, Wigan, Halifax, Boston, and Rochdale, as well as lower-division sides. He ended his playing career at non-league Scarborough.

After retiring, Redfearn moved into management, serving as caretaker and head coach at Leeds United four times between 2012 and 2015, followed by a brief stint at Rotherham United. He also coached women's teams Doncaster Belles, Liverpool Women, and Sheffield United Women between 2020 and 2022. His most recent role was at Farsley Celtic, which was liquidated in 2025 and now operates as a phoenix club, FC Farsley.

Lucy Ward's broadcasting career

Ward is one of several female pundits regularly working in men's football. Her analysis has been widely praised, and The Guardian named her one of the top broadcasters for the 2024/25 season. She works with ITV and TNT Sports, and has also contributed to Sky, BBC, Amazon Prime, the Premier League, and Champions League coverage.

Ward and Redfearn met while working together at Leeds United, where Ward served as head of education and welfare after retiring from football. She worked with academy players including James Milner, Aaron Lennon, Fabian Delph, and Kalvin Phillips. In 2023, she won a sex discrimination case against former owner Massimo Cellino, receiving £290,000 in compensation after claiming she was forced out of her role because of her relationship with Redfearn.

Relationship and future

Redfearn, who does not appear to have a public Instagram account, has not yet responded to the tribute. Ward continues to travel for World Cup matches and is expected to remain on ITV's coverage team for the remainder of the tournament.
