Newcastle's historic Grainger Market was turned into a catwalk on Saturday for a fashion show featuring winning designs from a local student initiative. The event was part of the British Fashion Council's new nationwide Fashion Britain programme, held in collaboration with Newcastle City Council.
Student designs on show
The show spotlighted winning designs from Future Heritage, Eldon Square's 50th-anniversary initiative created in partnership with Newcastle College and Fenwick Newcastle. Following an industry brief, 80 Newcastle College students created original fashion and textile designs inspired by Newcastle's heritage, with the winners seeing their work brought to life on the runway.
The event also included an exclusive catwalk show from award-winning Newcastle designer and Newcastle College University Centre alumnus Lamin Gibba, founder of high-end streetwear label Jerry J Clothing.
North East represented on the runway
On Saturday, the North East was well represented on the catwalk, with models sporting garments with the words "shy bairns get nowt". Some designs featured landmarks such as the Angel of the North and Tyne Bridge, while one model wore a skirt displaying the Newcastle Chronicle.
Fashion Britain programme
Created by the British Fashion Council, Fashion Britain is a landmark new programme designed to celebrate and strengthen British fashion beyond London. Newcastle joins six other UK cities in a nationwide programme of more than 1,000 events throughout September.
