Geordie humour and classic one-liners filled the Theatre Royal in Newcastle on Thursday night as Gerry & Sewell returned to Tyneside after a stint in London. The audience, many wearing Newcastle United tops, showed their local pride from the start.
A Night of Local Pride
The lively crowd waved black and white flags as the cast entered to AC/DC's Thunderstruck, chanting 'Toon Toon' across the auditorium. The production, a modern take on Jonathan Tulloch's novel The Season Ticket (adapted into the film Purely Belter in 2000), centers on two young lads from Gateshead desperate for Newcastle United season tickets. They embark on hilarious money-making schemes to raise the cash.
Outstanding Performances
Dean Logan (Wallsend) as Gerry and Jack Robertson (Whitley Bay) as Sewell captured the iconic Geordie humour perfectly, delivering classic one-liners effortlessly. The talented cast, including soap star Angela Lonsdale as Mrs McCarten, had the audience laughing one moment and silent the next, switching between funny and emotional scenes.
Local Music and Dancers
The scenes were complemented by local music, including Sam Fender's tunes, and a group of young dancers called 'The Hooligans'. Live performances from cast members, including Jack Robertson, added to the energy.
From Whitley Bay to the West End
The play originated at Laurel's Theatre in Whitley Bay, then moved to Live Theatre and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle before debuting at the Aldwych Theatre in London in January. A huge cheer erupted when the characters referenced being in the West End.
A Message of Hope
At its heart, the show carries a message of hope. Gerry and Sewell, living in poverty with limited prospects, show the audience that they can chase their dreams, no matter how big or small. The play ended with a standing ovation, and huge smiles were seen on faces throughout the theatre. If you're looking for a night of Geordie magic, this is the show for you.
