Roger Federer was left sitting alone in the Wimbledon Royal Box on Monday as fellow guests departed en masse, leaving the tennis icon in solitary view. The Swiss legend, who has won Wimbledon eight times, was attending Alexander Zverev's match against Jiri Lehecka after watching earlier games.
Lonely Scene in the Royal Box
Federer, 44, had been watching from the prestigious box throughout the day, including Jasmine Paolini's victory over Alex Eala and Arthur Fery's five-set win over Grigor Dimitrov. However, after Fery's grueling 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6(7) victory, the Royal Box guests quickly left in large numbers, presumably for food or a break between matches. When Zverev and Lehecka took to the court, the BBC cameras showed only Federer remaining in the stands.
Fery's Tribute to Federer
Earlier, Fery had pointed to Federer in the packed box and said: "First time on this court. Five sets against an absolute legend of the game. I grew up five minutes from here. We've got probably the greatest of all time in the front row watching. I saw him." The British No. 3 revealed that watching Federer play on Centre Court had inspired his own career, recalling the 2014 final between Novak Djokovic and Federer as a key memory.
