Emmerdale's Bhasker Patel Lands Broadway Debut After Soap Exit
Emmerdale's Bhasker Patel Makes Broadway Debut

Former Emmerdale actor Bhasker Patel has celebrated a major career milestone, making his debut on the Broadway stage in New York City. The star, best known for playing the beloved Rishi Sharma on the ITV soap, has embraced a dramatic new look for his latest role.

From the Dales to the Big Apple

Bhasker Patel, 69, portrayed Rishi Sharma on Emmerdale from 2011 until 2023, when his character was tragically killed off after falling down the stairs, missing his son Jai's wedding. Since leaving the Yorkshire-based soap, his career has flourished with roles in films like Sky Peals and Sumotherhood, as well as TV appearances.

His latest achievement is a part in the Broadway production of Oedipus at Studio 54, where he plays the character Corin. This marks Patel's first performance on the prestigious Broadway stage, signalling a significant new chapter for the actor.

A Sweet Transatlantic Reunion

To mark the occasion, Patel was visited in New York by his former on-screen wife and real-life friend, Rebecca Sarker. Sarker, 50, who plays Manpreet Sharma on Emmerdale, jetted to the US to offer her support.

The pair shared their reunion on Instagram, with Sarker posting photos alongside the Oedipus signage. She captioned her post: "What a guy! What a show! What a city!" accompanied by heart emojis. Patel also posted, revealing a touching detail: Sarker had brought him a taste of home, Jammie Dodgers from the UK.

An Unrecognisable New Look

In the shared social media photos, fans noted that Patel looks strikingly different from his clean-shaven Emmerdale character. The actor now sports a full grey beard, presenting a distinguished and almost unrecognisable appearance compared to his days in the Dales.

The online reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Former co-stars also chimed in; Kevin Mathurin, who plays Charles Anderson, commented, "Bhasker on Broadway. I love it," while Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana (Suni Sharma) added heartfelt emojis. Fans expressed missing him on Emmerdale but celebrated his exciting new venture, with one noting they were "thrilled Bhasker has proved beyond doubt there is life after E!"

Patel's journey from a long-running soap role to a Broadway debut demonstrates a successful and inspiring career transition, cheered on by his former colleagues and loyal fans alike.
