Coronation Street legend Chris Gascoyne was seen filming the new BBC drama The Northumbria Mysteries in Rothbury, Northumberland, on Wednesday. The actor, best known for playing Peter Barlow on the ITV soap, was shooting scenes outside The Turks Head pub.
New Detective Drama Fills Vera Void
Since Brenda Blethyn's Vera ended after 14 series on ITV over a year ago, there has been a gap in the market for a detective drama set in the North East. The Northumbria Mysteries aims to fill that void, generating buzz since filming began a few months ago.
The series stars Robson Green as Joe Ridley, an ex-convict and gambler with criminal connections, who teams up with Oxford-educated DI Rose O'Connell to solve crimes. Green, known for Soldier Soldier, Wire in the Blood, and Grantchester, is one of the North East's most famous actors.
Filming Locations and Cast
Filming has taken place in Morpeth, Seahouses, and Amble. This week, the crew moved to Rothbury, which Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle used as a key location for his zombie sequel 28 Years Later in 2024. On Tuesday, Gurjeet Singh, known for Ackley Bridge and Three Girls, was seen filming.
Chris Gascoyne played Peter Barlow on Coronation Street for years, with storylines including marrying both Shelley Unwin and Lucy Richards, and an on-off relationship with Carla Connor. He last appeared on the soap in 2023 after Peter ran over and killed serial killer Stephen Reid.
Other confirmed cast members for The Northumbria Mysteries include Simon Callow and Kevin Whately, though they have not yet been spotted on set.
