Burlesque the Musical was due to open at Sunderland Empire on August 6, but the theatre has confirmed the opening night has moved to Thursday, August 13. The changed schedule means the show's run in the city has been shortened, with performances continuing until it departs the theatre after August 22.
Tour changes
The revised date follows a number of changes to the production's UK plans. The tour was originally set to open at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking on July 25, but that performance was scrapped. A London run due to begin at the new Arts Theatre in Marble Arch in September has also been postponed until 2027.
Sunderland Empire had been scheduled to be the second stop on the tour, but it now serves as the opening venue instead. The Empire announced the new date on Monday afternoon.
Ticket details
According to the Empire's website, August 13 is now the first date of the Sunderland run. Tickets start from £31.20, with top-price seats at £89.60. Availability is good for all matinee and evening performances.
From film to stage
The musical is based on the 2010 film starring Christina Aguilera and Cher. It made its stage debut at the Opera House in Manchester in summer 2024, before moving to Glasgow and then opening at the Savoy Theatre in London last year. The production has seen significant changes in personnel over the past two years.
The show features songs from the film, including Welcome To Burlesque, Express and Show Me How You Burlesque, alongside new music from Christina Aguilera, Sia, Diane Warren, Todrick Hall and the stage show's original lead star, Jess Folley.
