Billy Porter has stepped down from his role in the Broadway revival of Cabaret after being diagnosed with a serious case of sepsis, prompting the show to close a month earlier than planned.
The 55-year-old actor, who played the Emcee since July, is recovering under medical advice to rest for several weeks. Producers stated that doctors are confident he will make a full recovery.
The show's weekly grosses had declined from a peak of $2 million in May 2024 to just over $500,000 by late August 2025. The production will now close on 21 September instead of 19 October, resulting in a financial loss.
Producer Adam Speers called it a 'painful decision' and praised Porter's 'extraordinary' performance, wishing him a speedy recovery. Alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino will take over the role for the final performances.
