The upcoming British BBC spy thriller Legacy of Spies is already generating significant buzz, with Collider predicting it could become "one of TV's biggest series ever." Adapted from John le Carré's global bestseller The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and drawing on his 2017 novel A Legacy of Spies, the eight-part drama is show-run and written by Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram.
Star-Studded Cast
The series marks the long-anticipated return of spymaster George Smiley to television, with two-time Emmy and Bafta Award-winning Matthew Macfadyen in the iconic role. Charlie Hunnam joins as Alec Leamas, the embattled agent-runner. Additional casting includes Daniel Brühl as Josef Fiedler, Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu as Doris Quinz, Agnes O'Casey as Liz Gold, Felix Kammerer as Hans-Dieter Mundt, Dan Stevens as Bill Haydon, and many more.
New Additions
Multi-award-winning Hugh Laurie (The Night Manager, House) and Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist, The Favourite) have joined the cast as Control and Jim Prideaux, respectively. Anjana Vasan plays Connie Sachs, Charlotte Ritchie takes on the role of Ann Smiley, and Lee Ross portrays Inspector Oliver Mendel. James McArdle, John Dagleish, and Goran Bogdan round out the Circus senior leadership.
Production Details
Academy Award nominee Claudia Llosa joins lead director Michael Lennox as second director on the series. Stephen and Simon Cornwell expressed their delight at having Llosa on board, stating: "We are delighted to have Academy Award nominee and Golden Bear winner Claudia Llosa bring her vision and cinematic sensibility to Legacy. Her joining Michael on directorial duties has only compounded what is shaping up to be a truly remarkable production."

Legacy of Spies is anticipated to release in late 2026 or early 2027.
