Ruben Amorim's appointment as AC Milan head coach will have significant financial repercussions for Manchester United, potentially boosting Michael Carrick's transfer funds ahead of a pre-season reunion between the two clubs.
Amorim's New Role at AC Milan
Amorim was appointed as Milan's head coach last week, signing a three-year deal. He replaces Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked at the end of the season after the Serie A giants failed to qualify for the Champions League. The 41-year-old Portuguese manager had been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United in January 2025 after a disastrous tenure.
Reports in Italy claim that Amorim has waived the year's pay United owed him following his dismissal, facilitating his move to the San Siro. Milan had considered Andoni Iraola before he took the Liverpool job, while former Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner was also a candidate.
Financial Boost for Manchester United
Amorim's move to Milan could see Carrick receive an inadvertent transfer kitty boost. United have been paying a large compensation bill of £15.9 million to cover their ex-manager's departure, along with his staff, which included four coaches. MEN Sport understands that the amount United are paying their former boss would drop drastically now that Amorim has secured a new position.
Should United stop paying the compensation fees, it could further bolster their transfer funds, with the club looking to bring in several new signings this summer. Carrick, who took over on an interim basis in January and was later appointed permanently after impressing, would benefit from the additional financial flexibility.
Pre-Season Reunion
United will conclude their pre-season tour this summer with a friendly against Milan at the Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw, Poland, on Saturday, August 15. This means an uncomfortable reunion with Amorim is now inevitable. One of the reasons for Amorim's sacking was rising tensions with the Old Trafford board. He called out the club's decision-makers after a match against Leeds, telling the media that others should focus on their jobs. He was sacked within 24 hours of that press conference, with Darren Fletcher taking caretaker charge for two matches before Carrick was appointed.
Amorim's tenure at United was historically poor: he had the worst win ratio, the worst goals conceded per game ratio, and the lowest clean sheet ratio of any United manager in history. His appointment in November 2024 from Sporting CP was initially met with optimism, but results quickly deteriorated.
