An American tourist has described fish and chips served at a North East chippy as 'life-changing', declaring the meal among the top three he had ever tasted. Chris Baird, a food and travel enthusiast, made the claim after visiting Davys, the long-standing fish and chip shop located inside Beamish Museum in County Durham.
Life-changing chippy experience
Baird, who has been travelling the UK alongside Kalani Ghosthunter and his partner Savannah—a US couple familiar with the North East—shared his reaction on Facebook. 'LIFE CHANGING CHIPPY…I’m not sure how, but they keep bringing me to these insane fish spots… Davys inside of Beamish museum is was truly insane! Top 3 best fish n chips I’ve had yet. I will dream about this one later,' he wrote.
The visit came after the group stayed at Beamish Hall Hotel, where Kalani treated his family to their first ever Sunday roast. Davys, which has drawn queues of visitors for decades—even outside of Good Friday—has been a staple at the open-air museum. The recent hot weather has further boosted trade.
Regional and national recognition
Davys recently made the shortlist at the inaugural English Fish & Chip Awards in Manchester, where Longbenton's Chip & Fish was named Best Fish and Chip Shop in the North East. The region's chippies have consistently earned accolades, with Hook in Seahouses topping a ChronicleLive reader poll earlier this year, and Bells in Durham and Trenches in Whitley Bay claiming national titles.
