World Cup Commentator Suspended After Mixing Up Iran and New Zealand
World Cup Commentator Suspended for Iran-New Zealand Mix-Up

Turkish state broadcaster TRT has suspended a veteran commentator after he mistakenly confused Iran and New Zealand during their World Cup clash. The four-minute mix-up quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism.

Commentator Suspended Over Error

Murat Ekrem Cimen, who has over 30 years of experience in sports broadcasting, was commentating on the match in Los Angeles when he incorrectly identified the teams. For the first four minutes, he described the side wearing white as New Zealand and those in black as Iran, when in reality the opposite was true. The error was only corrected when cameras showed Iran's Mehdi Taremi from behind, with his name clearly visible on his shirt.

The clip spread rapidly on social media, leading to fierce criticism of TRT. Cimen issued a public apology, and TRT released a statement confirming that the commentator had been removed from World Cup duties for the remainder of the tournament, though they did not name him directly.

TRT's Response

TRT stated: "The necessary administrative and investigative processes regarding this error, which is inconsistent with TRT Sports' decades-long broadcasting expertise, experience, and commitment to quality, have been immediately initiated. At the conclusion of the process, the necessary actions will be fully implemented."

The broadcaster added: "The relevant commentator has been withdrawn from the World Cup broadcast team in the US as part of the investigation process and will not continue with the tournament broadcasts. It is unacceptable for TRT that a figure with over 30 years of experience in sports broadcasting would make such a mistake. TRT does not tolerate any practices that violate broadcasting standards in national and international events reaching millions of viewers."

Match Recap

In the match itself, Iran fought back twice to deny New Zealand their first World Cup victory. Motherwell striker Elijah Just put New Zealand ahead on two occasions, but the Kiwis were pegged back each time. Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi both scored for Iran to secure a draw.
