The cosy crime drama Whitstable Pearl has been cancelled after three series, leaving fans devastated over the unresolved romance between the two main characters. Acorn TV, the streaming service behind the show, decided not to renew it for a fourth season, according to reports.
Series Axed After Loyal Following
Starring Kerry Godliman as Pearl Nolan, a restaurant owner and private investigator in the Kent seaside town of Whitstable, the show also aired on Channel 4 and U&Drama, building a devoted audience. However, Acorn TV chose to focus on other projects, ending the series abruptly.
A TV insider told the press: “It’s absolutely devastating for everybody involved as they feel the series will be left incomplete. Viewers are also going to be gutted as they’ll never know if the two main characters ever get together romantically, as the ‘will they, won’t they’ storyline has been a huge part of the drama.”
Unfinished Romance at the Heart
Across three series, Pearl’s complicated relationship with DCI Mike McGuire, played by Howard Charles, was central. Mike moved to Whitstable from London, and the pair initially clashed but gradually grew closer. Fans eagerly awaited a romantic resolution, which now will never come.
The series is based on the Whitstable Pearl novels by Julie Wassmer. The cancellation has left several plotlines unfinished, frustrating both cast and crew.
Kerry Godliman’s Next Role
Despite the disappointment, Godliman will continue in crime drama, taking on the role of Detective Inspector Andrea Dalziel in a new adaptation of Dalziel and Pascoe alongside Nina Singh. This offers fans another chance to see her solving cases.
