Where You've Seen Coronation Street's Mel Actress Before

Will Driscoll's mother, Mel, has finally made her debut on Coronation Street this week, arriving amid the turmoil surrounding her son's grooming ordeal. The character, played by actress Cindy Humphrey, has been mentioned several times previously but only now appears on the cobbles.

Mel's Arrival and Family Drama

Will (Lucas Hodgson-Wale) moved from Hull to Weatherfield last year with his father Ben (Aaron McCusker), grandmother Maggie (Pauline McLynn), brother Ollie (Raphael Akuwudike), and Ben's girlfriend Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley), who returned after a seven-year absence. It was later revealed that Will had been groomed by his athletics coach, Megan (Beth Nixon), who also relocated to Weatherfield to continue their illicit relationship. Recently, the truth came to light, but with no evidence to hold Megan accountable and Will sticking to their story of an out-of-control crush, Megan seemingly escaped justice.

This week, Mel appeared when Maggie found her in the Bistro. Mel angrily slammed Maggie for failing to protect Will and allowing him to become a victim of child grooming. Later, at the Rovers, Mel reunited with her family and explained to Will that Ollie had called her, and she was there to support him.

Actress Cindy Humphrey's Previous Roles

Cindy Humphrey is no stranger to television. She has appeared in ITV's psychological thriller Liar, BBC's long-running soap Doctors, and the detective series Maigret. More recently, she played Faith in the 2023 BBC prison drama Time, which featured a stellar cast including Siobhan Finneran, Jodie Whittaker, Bella Ramsey, and Sophie Willan.

Murder Plot Speculation

Some soap fans speculate that Mel might be involved in an upcoming murder plot. Megan is already known as one of five possible victims who could be killed off soon in a whodunnit twist. The other potential victims are Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn), and Jodie Ramsay (Olivia Frances Brown).

Next week, on April 27th, the ITV soap will dedicate a full week to the death, with viewers seeing the same day from the perspective of each potential victim. At the end of the week, Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) will discover one of them dead.

Fans have taken to social media with theories. One said, "I think Will's mum will murder Megan, or it could be vice versa if Megan murders Will's mum." Another added, "A bit convenient of Will's mum to turn up when there's a murder next week." A third chimed in, "I bet that's the plot twist, Mel ends up killing Megan, and nobody will know for the longest that it's her. Maybe this could lead Mel into becoming a permanent character."

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
