A critically acclaimed drama described as a "masterpiece" is set to air on Channel 4 this Saturday evening. Originally released in 2022, the film is an adaptation of Delia Owens' bestselling 2018 novel.
Production and Cast
Produced by Reese Witherspoon and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Taylor John Smith, Where the Crawdads Sing has been praised as "beautiful" and "mesmerising" by audiences. The story centers on Edgar-Jones' character, Kya, a young girl abandoned by her family who learns to survive alone in the marshlands of North Carolina.
Plot Overview
When a local boy is found dead after falling from a tower, Kya becomes the prime suspect. The film chronicles her upbringing, beginning with her mother and siblings fleeing their abusive father, leaving Kya in his care. Eventually, her father also abandons her when she is just seven years old. Shunned by the community, she survives by selling mussels to a local shop and learns to read with the help of her only friend, Tate. A romance blossoms, but when Tate leaves for college and never returns, Kya is alone again. Years later, she begins a relationship with a popular local boy, only to discover he is engaged and has subjected her to violent acts. When he turns up dead, Kya stands trial, with circumstantial evidence, town gossip, and her missing necklace all counting against her.
Audience Reactions
The gripping mystery left viewers spellbound. One fan declared it "the best movie" of 2022, while another said, "Never wanted it to end." A third remarked, "It is simply one of the most beautiful movies I've seen for many years." Others called it "a cinematic masterpiece: a heart-touching beautiful love story" and "gripping, makes you fall in love with life again." One viewer described it as "NOT To Be Missed," while another claimed, "This movie is better than Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze." Fans labelled it a "must see" and a "coming of age masterpiece," with one calling it a "gripping emotional rollercoaster" that "struck a heart chord."
Daisy Edgar-Jones on the Film's Reception
Following the positive reviews, Edgar-Jones told Elle that "it's been the thing that most people come up to say they loved." She added, "For some people, it's their favorite film. How amazing is that? And I had the best time, and I think it's a great film." She continued, "Art is so subjective, and you can't control how people respond. You can only do something with goodwill and to learn something from it yourself, I suppose. And then how people respond is because of their context and what they need."
Where the Crawdads Sing airs on Saturday, June 13 at 9pm on Channel 4.
