Adrian Dunbar has sparked fresh speculation about the future of Line of Duty after dropping hints during an appearance on This Morning. The actor, who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings in the BBC police drama, was asked by hosts Emma Willis and Joel Dommett whether he was excited to return to the series. Dunbar replied: 'Yeah. When it happens, yes. Absolutely we'll be excited to go back.'
However, Dunbar admitted that no official confirmation has been received yet. 'We actually don't know if it's going to happen,' he said. 'I actually called my agent this morning to see if there's anymore news but there isn't any real definite news, sadly. So we're just going to have to wait.'
The series six finale, which aired in 2021, attracted 16 million viewers but received mixed reviews from fans. The reveal of DSU Ian Buckells as the mysterious 'H' was criticised by some, while others praised the understated conclusion. Creator Jed Mercurio responded to complaints on social media, saying: 'It's interesting how many of the people most critical of the finale were wanting more thrills and action. This is the problem with attempting to satisfy all viewers' expectations.'
Dunbar, who stars alongside Martin Compston and Vicky McClure, previously told Radio Times that the trio are 'very tight' and meet up regularly, but creator Jed Mercurio has been working on a project in the US. 'We’re all waiting for the BBC to say, ‘Yeah, it’s happening’. An official confirmation is what we’re waiting on, but all the signs are very good,' Dunbar said.
