Richard Gadd's highly anticipated follow-up to Baby Reindeer, titled Half Man, makes its regular television debut tonight on BBC One at 10:40pm, having premiered on iPlayer last week. The drama tells the story of two 1980s schoolboys whose lives become deeply intertwined. Mitchell Robertson and Stuart Campbell deliver outstanding performances as weak Niall and violent Ruben, respectively. Small Things Like These (Tim Mielants, 2024), available on Netflix, is a heart-rending drama adapted by Enda Walsh from Claire Keegan's novel. It tackles Ireland's Magdalene laundries scandal from a domestic perspective, with Cillian Murphy using his haunted visage to great effect as 1980s coal merchant Bill Furlong. The brutal treatment of girls at a convent where he makes deliveries ignites his compassion, but he faces the community's silence in the face of the church's power. Simon Wardell reviews.
