Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty were left stunned after Jeremiah Fisher’s lacklustre proposal to Belly Conklin, which followed his admission of cheating. The proposal initially came without a ring, and when one was eventually produced, it was described by friend Taylor Jewel as a tiny sliver of 'tinfoil'.
Despite the underwhelming gesture, Belly accepted, seemingly glossing over Jeremiah’s infidelity. However, relationship coach Gemma Nice, speaking exclusively to Reach Screen Time, highlighted several red flags in Jeremiah’s behaviour that could spell trouble for the couple.
Nice noted that Jeremiah appears to be in constant competition with his brother Conrad, seeking validation from their father. 'His relationship with Belly feels partly like an extension of that competition,' she said, pointing to his comment to Belly’s mother, 'Belly chose me,' which many interpreted as 'Belly chose me, not my brother.'
Another concern is Jeremiah’s commitment. After an argument with Belly about a holiday, he made a passive breakup comment and slept with another girl twice within days. 'If he were truly devoted, he wouldn’t have left that argument unresolved or sought comfort elsewhere,' Nice explained.
Regarding the tiny ring, Nice said the size wasn’t the issue but rather Jeremiah’s overall behaviour, including ordering the most expensive item on the menu when Laurel offered to pay, buying the ring on his father’s credit card without permission, and choosing gold when Belly wears silver.
Nice suggested Belly may be overlooking these red flags because she loves Jeremiah and hopes he can change, or because she fears being alone. 'She could be hoping that Jeremiah will change once she has agreed to the engagement and believes she has the power to change him,' Nice added. Fans will have to wait to see if the couple makes it down the aisle, but their relationship appears to be on shaky ground.
