Joe Marler, a finalist from the first series of The Celebrity Traitors, has admitted that he deliberately cuts his toenails the wrong way so they develop ingrowns. During an exclusive chat with Daily Star, the former rugby player shared the unusual habit, which he openly described as "minging."
Marler confessed that he likes to perform what he calls "mini surgery" when the deformed nails begin to grow back. He explained that he actively encourages the condition on his big toes, despite knowing the proper way to trim his nails.
A Habit of 'Mini Surgery'
"This is minging, but you asked for weird. I actively try and encourage myself to get ingrown toenails on my big toes," Marler told Daily Star. "There's a certain way you're meant to cut your nails, but I cut them in the way that encourages them to grow the wrong way just so I can then become a mini surgeon."
He added: "Then I can perform this tiny bit of surgery on my toe." Marler also revealed that he has special gloves for the pastime, separate from those he uses for BBQing, stating, "I never mix the two!"
Slowing Down with Age
Marler noted that the habit has slowed in recent years, saying, "It seems to have slowed down a bit in the last couple of years, if I'm honest. I don't know if that's age, your nails grow a lot less."
When asked how often he trims his toenails this way, he responded, "I couldn't possibly tell you how many times. Loads." He joked that with the number of times he has done it, he could become an expert, saying, "I could be a toenail doctor, that's how many times I've done it!"
