Time finale: David Tennant's BBC drama ends emotionally

The BBC prison drama Time, starring David Tennant as prison officer Bobby Bailey and Siobhan Finneran as chaplain Marie-Louise, has concluded with what is believed to be its final series. The three-episode season, set in a Young Offenders Institute, examined the consequences of incarcerating teenage boys and the toll it takes on staff.

Final episode reveals tragedy and truth

The opening of the final episode showed Bobby looking ahead with optimism while on a date with Nicola. His newfound positivity was shattered when she was suddenly struck by a vehicle and killed.

Before her death, Nicola had been urging Bobby to reveal the truth about corruption within the institution, following Fred's decision to leave Ushindo and Paddy unsupervised, which resulted in Ushindo's death. During a court inquest, Bobby disclosed Fred's conduct, concluding the series with a clear conscience as he became emotional speaking to Ushindo's mother.

Young offenders' fates resolved

For young offender Peter, who had remained silent out of family loyalty, he eventually revealed that his cousin Toby had fatally killed a man. Peter was found not guilty at trial and released to raise his baby with his girlfriend.

Meanwhile, James, who viewers learned had killed his disabled brother, was moved to an adult prison for the remainder of his sentence.

No fourth season expected

The conclusion follows creator Jimmy McGovern hinting there would be no further seasons. He told Radio Times: "I do them because I love doing them, although I think this will be the last Time. I have said that many a time before, though, because these are also stories I feel bound to tell."

Viewers reacted emotionally, with one writing: "It's mixed emotions watching Time. This series with the young offenders has been the hardest watch, because you feel helpless. So many issues that can't be solved over night (or really even at all). It's so sad." Another added: "Bloody Hell @BBCOne no easy Sunday night viewing here. #TIME is so harrowing, sad, devastating but brilliant!"

One viewer commented: "Just finished episode 3 and it was outstandingly brilliant, the gasp moment hits hard the endings are perfect. The BBC at its finest." Another wrote: "Binged all three series of Time over the past week, and honestly, what a phenomenal piece of television. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a series from beginning to end quite this much."

Time is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
