Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the composer behind the Emmy-winning theme music for The White Lotus, has left the series due to ongoing creative clashes with creator Mike White. De Veer told the New York Times that White never liked his award-winning title music, preferring a more chilled-out Ibiza-style track instead.
De Veer described the working environment as 'hysterical', with conversations often escalating into screaming matches. 'There were crazy people and screaming and stuff like that,' he said. Despite the tension, he stuck to his artistic vision, which earned him three Emmys and turned the season-two theme into a club hit remixed by Tiësto.
The composer admitted he may have seemed unprofessional by refusing to give White what he wanted, but defended his choices: 'What I gave him did this – did those Emmys, people going crazy.' His music for season three sparked fan backlash over the omission of the signature vocal ululations, leading to a global media furore.
De Veer claimed he tried to calm fans by releasing the full version of the theme, but White vetoed the idea. 'At that point, we already had our last fight for ever, I think. So he was just saying no to anything,' de Veer said, adding that he eventually uploaded the track to his own YouTube channel.
This is not the only controversy surrounding the new season. Duke University recently complained about the unauthorised use of its logo on a T-shirt worn by actor Jason Isaacs' character, particularly in scenes depicting suicide. A university spokesperson said the imagery 'does not reflect our values' and 'simply goes too far'. Representatives for The White Lotus have been contacted for comment.
