'Tell Me Lies' Season 3 Finale: Showrunner and Stars on the Explosive End and What Comes Next

The third season of Tell Me Lies has concluded with a dramatic finale that leaves no character unscathed. In the episode titled 'Are You Happy Now That I’m on My Knees', Lucy’s life falls apart as she is expelled from college, Bree’s biological mother makes a troubling appearance involving Oliver, and Diana secures her place at Yale while growing closer to Pippa. The climax sees Stephen deliver a devastating speech at a wedding, destroying relationships and revealing secrets.

Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer explained that Lucy’s expulsion was a long-planned consequence of her toxic relationship with Stephen. 'There was always the idea that she had had some big public humiliating downfall because of Stephen,' Oppenheimer said. 'It also just made sense because you can’t continue her storyline at college while half the cast had graduated.'

Grace Van Patten, who plays Lucy, noted that her character’s attempt to sabotage Stephen’s Yale Law mixer was motivated by altruism. 'It wasn’t selfish, it was for Diana,' Van Patten said. 'It’s the first time that Lucy’s not taking action in a selfish way.' However, the plan backfires, leading to Lucy’s expulsion and emotional breakdown.

Jackson White, who portrays Stephen, relished the opportunity to deliver the explosive wedding monologue. 'He’s obviously been collecting secrets and to get to unload them, that was very, very fun,' White said. 'I know it ruined the character’s lives, but I had fun.'

The cast reflected on the unique chemistry that defined the series, with Van Patten calling it a 'cupid show' due to the number of real-life relationships among the actors. 'The first season was really magic, and everyone was meeting each other and also many people were falling in love,' she recalled.

As the series ends, the future for characters like Lucy and Stephen remains uncertain, but the finale provides a definitive conclusion to their tumultuous storylines.
