The new Paramount Plus series The Madison has premiered, and viewers were met with a poignant tribute to the late Robert Redford before the credits rolled on the first episode. The neo-Western drama, created by Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan, is set in Montana and follows the Clyburn family as they seek solace in the Madison River valley after a tragedy.
Robert Redford, who died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 89 on 16 September 2025, was a titan of American cinema. His career spanned decades, from early television appearances on Alfred Hitchcock Presents to iconic film roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, and later as Alexander Pierce in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The tribute stems from a deep connection between Redford and Sheridan. Sheridan had originally pitched Yellowstone to HBO, who demanded a “Robert Redford type” for the lead. Sheridan secured Redford himself, but HBO backtracked, claiming they meant a similar star, not the actor himself. The series eventually found a home on Paramount with Kevin Costner in the role.
Though Redford never appeared in Yellowstone, his influence looms large over Sheridan’s work. The dedication in The Madison serves as a heartfelt nod to the actor who almost played John Dutton and whose legacy continues to inspire the television landscape.
