The Last of Us, one of HBO's most significant and controversial shows, has fans questioning the fate of its highly anticipated third season. Recent reports indicate that production has been paused, but the series itself has not been cancelled.
Why Is Filming on Hold?
Filming for The Last of Us season 3 was postponed to accommodate World Cup matches taking place in Vancouver. According to Screen Rant, production is on hiatus from June 1st to June 28th, a move confirmed by the British Columbia directory for TV and film productions. Industry insiders, as reported by Men's Journal, cite the World Cup as the primary reason for the delay.
Fan Reactions and Misunderstandings
The pause has sparked concern among some viewers. One cynical user on X predicted: "They'll cancel the season any minute now, just watch." Another commented: "Hopefully it's an indefinite pause." A third wrote: "This series turned into a total joke, a complete mess—I even dropped it myself." However, many fans remain optimistic. A Redditor clarified: "Hiatus vs Canceled are two entirely different things. Production is not canceled." Another fan expressed excitement: "I can't wait to see it."
What to Expect in Season 3
The third season will focus on Kaitlyn Dever as WLF soldier Abby, charting her gruelling three-day trek through Seattle with Lev, played by Kyriana Kratter, a teenage member of the Seraphites cult. Viewers will also learn more about her traumatic backstory leading to her devastating encounter with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal) in season two. Production is set to resume at the end of June and continue until November 27th.
The Last of Us season two premiered in spring 2025 and drew nearly 37 million viewers per episode, despite its controversial storyline. The series, based on the popular PlayStation franchise, follows survivors of a viral fungus outbreak that turns most of the population into mutated zombies. HBO has not yet commented on the production pause.
The Last of Us is available to stream on Sky, NOW, and HBO Max.
