Devotees of period dramas have been impatiently awaiting the comeback of the Channel 5 rags-to-riches programme, The Hardacres, which returns with fresh instalments tonight.

The second series of the Channel 5 family drama, which has been described as a "masterpiece", unfolds in 1895, a year which ushered in electricity, innovative concepts and fresh connections at Hardacre Hall. Every character encounters a different obstacle, with Mary Hardacre (portrayed by Claire Cooper) advocating for adult learning while Sam (Liam McMahon) makes moves during an approaching economic downturn to grow the family enterprise. Yet their greatest test comes from a formidable newcomer, Lady Imelda Hansen – the mother of their neighbour Emma (Cathy Belton).

Who plays Lady Imelda Hansen in The Hardacres?

The commanding character is brought to life by Michele Dotrice, a 77 year old performer from Lincolnshire. She's most recognised for her portrayal of Betty Spencer, the long-suffering wife of Frank Spencer, in the BBC comedy Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. Her role in the sitcom catapulted her to national fame and she inhabited the character for five years throughout the 70s.

In conversation with journalists before the series launched, Ma Hardacre actress Julie Graham heaped praise upon the star. She remarked: "Michele Dotrice was just the most perfect addition to The Hardacres because as an actress and as a person she slotted right in. She's gorgeous, she's warm, she's funny, she's hugely talented. I mean, she's a legend, for Christ's sake, and we just absolutely adored her."

Back in 1981, Michele secured the lead in ITV sitcom Chintz, before appearing in numerous beloved programmes including Midsomer Murders, Death in Paradise, Doctors and Holby City. Her most recent credited performance saw her portray Dot Barnes in the sixth series of Unforgotten.

Hailing from a distinguished acting dynasty, Michele's parents Roy Dotrice and Kay Dotrice were both actors. Her sister, Karen Dotrice, famously brought Jane Banks to life in Disney's iconic Mary Poppins. Michele wed actor Edward Woodward in January 1987, remaining together until his passing in November 2009. Edward was celebrated for his portrayal of the titular character in the television spy thriller Callan.

The Hardacres season 2 airs on Channel 5 from 9pm on May 14.
