Netflix's latest sci-fi thriller The Boroughs has stormed to 15 million views in just 10 days, leaving fans desperate for a second season.
Netflix's The Boroughs: A New Sci-Fi Hit
A stunning new Netflix thriller has succeeded in racking up millions of views within its opening 10 days on the platform. It launched back in May (Thursday 21st) to tremendous praise from both audiences and critics alike, achieving a remarkable 97 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fans of the debut season who are eager for more will be heartened by the prospect of a second series, as The Boroughs' initial eight-episode run accumulated an impressive 15 million views.
Executive produced by Stranger Things masterminds The Duffer Brothers, the show centres on a group of pensioners living in an apparently picture-perfect community in New Mexico, who gradually unearth a sinister, supernatural secret lurking deep beneath their town, reports the Mirror.
Alfred Molina (Remarkably Bright Creatures) leads the cast as The Boroughs' reluctant newcomer Sam Cooper, joined by an outstanding ensemble that includes Alfre Woodard (Annabelle), Denis O'Hare (American Horror Story), Clarke Peters (His Dark Materials), and Geena Davis (Blink Twice).
A Group of Retirees Discover a Chilling Secret
Since dropping on the streaming giant, the series - created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews - has claimed the top spot on Netflix's global chart, and remarkably continues to sit at eighth place on the streamer's UK rankings nearly a month after its premiere. It even surpassed the eagerly awaited second series of The Four Seasons in a remarkable achievement for a completely original and unproven fresh release.
With the opening instalment wrapping up with a chilling cliffhanger, supporters anticipate Netflix could approve series two at any moment.
Enthusiasts have been effusive about the programme, drawing positive parallels to vintage 1980s pictures by Steven Spielberg, making it essential viewing for those who dashed to cinemas for the legendary filmmaker's latest picture Disclosure Day.
Fan Reactions and Critical Acclaim
One 10/10 review on IMDb gushed: "You can feel the influence of E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Goonies, and especially Cocoon throughout the series. There are also strong Spielberg-inspired touches in the way the show mixes awe, suspense, humour, and human emotion."
"Overall, The Boroughs is a charming, suspenseful, and heartfelt sci-fi adventure with memorable characters, excellent performances, a nostalgic soundtrack, and clever nods to some of cinema's greatest genre films. It reminds viewers that courage, friendship, and the desire for adventure never fade with age. For anyone who loves character-driven science fiction with a touch of classic Spielberg magic, The Boroughs is absolutely worth watching."
Another audience member went further still, branding The Boroughs an "absolute masterpiece" that "might actually top" Stranger Things when it comes to quality.
"This show tells a meaningful tale about aging and grieving, all wrapped up in an irresistible adventure," they went on. "A must watch. I can't wait to see what they will do with the story, renew the show already!!"
Here's hoping the mystery will keep on going. The Boroughs is available to stream on Netflix.
