Taron Egerton has dismissed speculation that he could be the next James Bond, stating that the role would be 'wasted' on him. The 35-year-old Welsh actor, known for his roles in the Kingsman franchise, told Collider that he does not believe he is the right fit for the iconic spy series.
'I think I’m too messy for that. I think I’m not [the right fit] – I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure,' Egerton said. 'But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.'
The actor also expressed concerns about the lifestyle demands of playing 007. 'As far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it,' he added. 'But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. It kind of consumes your life, a role like that.'
Rumours have been swirling about who will succeed Daniel Craig, who stepped down after 2021's No Time To Die. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is currently the favourite, with other names such as Idris Elba, Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson, and Timothée Chalamet also in the mix. Denis Villeneuve has been named as the director of the upcoming Amazon-MGM production.
Craig, who played Bond in five films from 2006 to 2021, was asked by Variety which actor he would like to pass the torch to. He replied simply: 'I don’t care.'
