Quentin Tarantino has lambasted modern Hollywood, describing it as 'a flavourless sausage factory' in a new article for Sight and Sound magazine. The Pulp Fiction director wrote that since the pandemic, he finds it 'almost impossible for a new movie to come out that I don’t pick to death', citing flaws, implausibilities, and audience pandering as common issues.
Tarantino contrasted today's films with those of the 1980s, which he said were 'pretty bad too' but forgivable because he 'loved going to the movies'. He added: 'These days, however, the entire concept of what is a movie is more inclined to inspire contempt in me than generosity.'
The director did praise a few recent releases, including Joe Carnahan's The Rip on Netflix, Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, and Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga. However, he lamented that nothing has 'swept me away to the magical land of enjoyment' and confessed: 'These days I’d rather read a book.'
Tarantino's most recent film, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, was released in 2019. He is currently working on a swashbuckling play, The Popinjay Cavalier, set to open in London's West End in 2027.
