Two radio presenters were visibly emotional as they announced live on air that their breakfast show on Hits Radio West Midlands has been cancelled after two decades. John Dalziel, known as JD, and co-host Roisin McCourt delivered the news to listeners, with Dalziel struggling to hold back tears.
The show is being pulled as part of a nationwide restructure, to be replaced from June 9 by a national breakfast programme fronted by Fleur East, Will Best, and James Barr. The final broadcast of the regional show will be on June 6.
Dalziel, his voice cracking with emotion, said: 'After almost 20 years of broadcasting around here, our show is coming to an end. We just wanna thank you because we've loved being part of your morning routine.' McCourt reflected on her 21 years on the show, noting she had three children during that time and would now be waking them up instead of listeners.
Dalziel paid tribute to their 'incredible journey', saying they had 'grown up on this show' and shared life experiences including having children, breakups, and more. He described the privilege of broadcasting to their home area as 'incredibly special'.
Fans reacted with dismay on social media, with many saying they would stop listening after the duo's departure. One listener wrote: 'You guys make my hour long morning commute brighter. I'm so sad we are gonna lose local DJs.'
