Comedian Robert Webb has withdrawn from Strictly Come Dancing following medical advice, the BBC has confirmed. The Peep Show star, who underwent open heart surgery two years ago, said he had begun experiencing symptoms that led him to consult his heart specialist, who recommended he step back from the show.
In a statement, Webb expressed regret at leaving the competition, stating: 'I had bitten off way more than I could chew for this stage in my recovery.' He praised his dance partner Dianne Buswell, calling her 'a more talented partner or more patient teacher', and thanked viewers for their support, particularly from fellow heart patients.
Webb and Buswell had performed three dances, including a tango that scored 27 in week two, praised for his 'composure' and 'character'. However, their most recent routine, a quickstep to the Muppet Show theme tune dressed as Kermit and Miss Piggy, scored 25 and was described as 'jerky'. Viewers had voted them through to avoid the dance-off on Sunday.
Buswell said: 'I know Robert had a lot more to give to the competition but his health of course comes first.' She added she felt lucky to have danced with him and to call him a friend. Webb will now focus on his recovery while cheering on the remaining contestants until the Christmas finale.
